navy wedded bliss...

Who loves navy blue? I do. I do (you'll get the meaning behind my corny pun further down).

Navy is just rocking the fashion runways these days, and I'm cheering it on! When I spotted these Swarovski crystal-studded flip flops in the spa last weekend, the first thought I had was, "Wouldn't they make a fabulous bridesmaid gift?"

Just imagine bridesmaids gleefully slipping these on at the reception, when their Jimmy Choos have frayed their very last nerve. If it's a beach wedding...even better!

Casbah has a great selection of flip flops

And just in case you need proof that navy is a hot wedding colour choice this season, check this out! Oh Snap!

dear mom...

Hope you're enjoying this beautiful Mother's Day weekend! It's sunny and everyone's soaking up the rays in the lower mainland. This is one of our busiest weekends of the year and the spa is just buzzing with people picking up special indulgences for the mothers in their lives. We love our customers so much that we set up a free mini massage station to pamper some of the folks who popped in.

Fresh lavender and bath & body products--who wouldn't love that? You'd be a star if you showed up with one of these gift packages for mom!

You'll NEVER go wrong with a manicure or pedicure (or both...she raised kids after all). These are some of the gorgeous new summer OPI polishes. I'm dying to try every one!

The Power of Peptides

What are peptides exactly?

Peptides. Also known as “mini proteins” – are one of the hottest ingredients in skincare (and yes, found in our Caviar and Correcting lines).

Our skin is made up mostly of collagen; it is the foundation that gives your skin its support and thickness. Young people have lots of collagen and taut, smooth skin. In contrast, older people have much less collagen and thin, more wrinkled skin. Collagen is protein and is made up of long chains of amino acids strung together, like chains of linked building blocks. When it is broken down, short segments of three-to-five amino acids form, called peptides. Among other messages, Peptides signal your skin to make more collagen. Peptides and proteins represent a wide world of possibilities, and many molecular biologists spend years researching the functions of single peptides and proteins to learn more about how the body works.

Scientists can make peptides to perform any number of functions including to help rejuvenate, rebuild and to lighten the skin. And yes – signal your skin to make more collagen. Applying peptides directly to your skin is a way to trick your skin into thinking that it has lost collagen recently and needs to make more. You can find peptides in the Caviar Age-Defense Serum, Caviar Night Crème and Caviar Eye Crème in our Caviar Skincare Collection and in our At-Home Professional Peel and Brightening Eye Crème in our Correcting Skincare range. Its prefix determines the number of peptides it is made up of. For example, Penta means it has five, Tri, three and so on.

While effective alone, peptides work even better in conjunction with antioxidants, alpha hydroxy acids, natural marine ingredients and essential oils. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals (molecules that want to join with other molecules and when doing so, cause cellular damage), so having antioxidants in your skincare products is a must.

Some desirable antioxidants (and we use them) include Sea Algae (Spirulina among many others), Aloe, Green Tea and Vitamin C. Inflammation is responsible for many or even most of the challenges we face in skincare like rosacea and hyperpigmentation – which is why proper nutrition also plays a key role in having beautiful skin, and protecting and calming the skin with anti-inflammatory ingredients is important.

Using advanced peptides helps to restore and maintain skin’s smooth, youthful look. The skin also gets a firming boost since peptides help support development of connective tissue.

Peptides can be powerful wrinkle fighters when combined with great antioxidant products and a healthy lifestyle.

Pampering is Not a Dirty Word | The Psychology of Wellbeing

I just returned from the SpaTec event in Orlando, Florida where I was invited to give the keynote address on “In Defense of Pampering.”  For the past few years I have been arguing that the spa industry, in its attempts to be more relevant in a down economy has been turning its back on the one thing that sets spas apart from other healing institutions in our society (you can read about this positioning here or see a video of another version of this talk here .)

My position on this issue is somewhat controversial as many people in the spa industry want to move away from pampering, for fear that it is not perceived as relevant by consumers.  They feel that spas should be more focused on health and wellness so they rise in importance in our consumers’ minds and the perceived value of the spa experience will be greater.

I get these concerns.  I really do.  Wellness is important.  And I think spas do have a strong role to play in bringing greater wellness options to consumers.  But the spa industry does not have to move away from pampering to offer wellness.

In an attempt to be taken more seriously, spas that try to move away from pampering and towards wellness find themselves competing with a variety of other healing institutions that are focused on offering scientifically validated “medical” healing interventions.  But spas have an opportunity, by embracing their pampering identity, to set themselves apart from these other health institutions.  Spas offer wellness that feels good, that people look forward to, and that considers the emotional and spiritual aspects of our wellbeing in addition to the physical.  Spas do not have to choose either pampering or wellness; they can use pampering as a pathway to wellness.

Some of this is semantics.  Pampering, by definition, is an “excessive” indulgence.  And maybe my definition of pampering is different than yours.  But it is interesting what we think of as “excessive” in today’s culture.  In today’s world, time is a luxury.  Silence is a luxury.  Separation from technology is a luxury.  The things that we experience in the spa are luxury indulgences because they are hard to come by in modern life.  Nurturing is scarce.  Time is a commodity.  And digital barriers are diluting human contact at every turn.

In the spas that I operate, we offer wellness and we offer pampering.  We believe they go hand in hand.  I think of spas as places that people can go to heal themselves.  But it doesn’t work if it doesn’t feel good.  People need a place to go to slow down, to connect with and be touched by other human beings, to have time for quiet reflection and contemplation, and to experience a variety of positive emotions through a beautifully indulgent sensory experience.

Although the spa world is ashamed of its own identity, we are the leaders in providing healing that feels good.  We are the only healing institution in our society that people look forward to visiting and that they enjoy while they are there.  Hospitals are learning that beautiful spa-like settings and higher levels of customer service have a positive impact on the health of their patients.  And a growing body of scientific literature supports the links between feeling good and being well.

So my message to the spa industry is to stand tall and be proud . . . pampering is not a dirty word.
