Are you working on anything exciting right now?

I am really excited because shortly we will be launching Casbah's new website! We incorporated a lot of things that I know the Casbah clients and staff are really going to love! We've got the new blog right on the website along with weekly updates, a convenient shopping page complete with staff favourites and a lot of other new surprises. Stay tuned!

What's your favourite part of the job?

I absolutely love design. Right now I'm enjoying designing the new website, but I also love creating every week the new newsletters and promotions. 

What is your favourite service at the spa?

I have heard amazing reviews about the facials, but haven't tried it out yet. I have tried the pedicure and LOVE it. All inclusive, complete with gel polish and wine! It doesn't get better than that:)

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

Well lately I've really been into a good nap! But once I'm rested I love hanging with friends and going for a good hike or good appies... or a lot of both;)

Less Stress, More Living!

These last few harried weeks of 2012 are the ideal time to start focusing on a big idea for 2013: Less Stress, More Living. The holiday season is upon us — a time to lovingly connect with family, to relax, recharge and emerge happy, content and revitalized. Just kidding. In fact, of course, it's usually the complete opposite. 

But why is that? What is it about special occasions — whether it's dinner parties or weddings or birthdays or, especially, the holidays — that fill us with such stress? Instead of leaving us recharged, the holiday season is more likely to leave us drained. Or "blorft," as Tina Fey calls it. "'Blorft' is an adjective I just made up," she writes in BossyPants, "that means 'Completely overwhelmed but proceeding as if everything is fine and reacting to the stress with the torpor of a possum.'" Most of us have been there, felt that. And many will be blorft again between now and New Year's Day, when we can officially start feeling guilty and stressed out about breaking the resolutions we'll make in response to the stress-induced overindulgence of the holiday season.

My big idea has two parts: first, acknowledge that we are overstressed, and second, take the necessary steps to identify the sources of our stress and course-correct. And while stress isn't limited to any one time of year, I strongly believe in using opportune moments in our lives to help bring about the changes we need. At Casbah, we offer massage and various other relaxation services to demonstrate that even in the middle of one of the busiest seasons, women and men can unplug, recharge, and hit the ground renewed.

Similarly, we want to use this moment — the end of one year and the beginning of another, and all the hopes, aspirations, reflection, and resolutions that are part of this interstitial moment — to summon the ingenuity we all possess in order to reduce stress.

Because this is the perfect moment to slow down and reflect on why what should be a time of generosity, celebration, and coming together so often becomes a time of high anxiety and alienation. But of course stress isn't limited to the holidays — it's a destructive force that affects almost every aspect of our lives, from our health and relationships to our careers and creativity.

And in fact, our stress epidemic is a major factor in one of our other debilitating national epidemics — sleep deprivation. Work stress keeps 46 percent of Americans up at night, according to a 2012 study.

The philosophy behind Less Stress, More Living is based on two truths: that we all have within us a centred place of harmony and balance, and that we all veer away from that place again and again. That's the nature of life. In fact, we may be off-course more often than we are on-course. If we understand these two truths and prioritize reducing the destructive effects of stress in our lives, 2013 can be the year we reconnect with our own creativity, wisdom, and joy!

What is your role at the Spa?

I am an Esthetician and Make-Up Artist.

Can you tell us a little bit about the Glymed products?

Glymed Products are great! Glmyed is great for showing fast results for treating problem skin such as acne or sun damage and pigmented skin.

Do you have a favourite Glymed product?

Like many people, I love the AHA Exfoliating Masque. It provides a great "at-home" mini facial when you need a quick pick me up and it leaves the skin feeling rejuvenated, radiant and soft. The Licorice Extract is also a great buy… it's an anti-inflammatory that contains AHA, helping cell turnover. Who couldn't love that?

How would you describe our Vitamin A Power Peel Treatment?

The Vitamin A Peel is great for any skin type for a "pick-me-up", especially getting into this busy holiday season!! The peel sloughs away the dead skin for a great glow and better cell renewal. It also works to calm inflammation in the skin, evening skin texture and helping your skin be able to better absorb all your favourite skin products.

What's your favourite part of the job?

I love making people feel amazing from the moment we meet with a warm hand shake to the moment they leave with a great big smile. My career is amazing… I get to meet a variety of different people, building relationships and friendships.

What is your favourite service at the spa?

If I was coming in to the spa I would totally be coming for the Shellac for the season... not having to worry about the nails drying is perfect for the busy women on the go;)

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon is a good walk in the woods or mountains surrounded by fresh air and serenity!

The Kashware robes/ blankets are amazing. I also love the soap we have in right now (Dam Good Soap) and it's local!

Any gift ideas for the holiday season?

The soap is a great stocking stuffer!

What's your favourite part of the job?

I love when someone comes in having a bad day and leave feeling refreshed and smiling. 

What is your favourite service at the spa?

The signature facial with add on brown sugar scrub. You are transformed head to toe.

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

Anything with my kids and husband :)

How long have you been with Casbah?

I have been working at Casbah since June 2012. I was on a three week work experience at Casbah through a school program that lead me to receiving an official job here.

What is your role at the Spa?

I am a spa attendant.

What does the Spa Attendant do?

I basically make sure the spa looks presentable when clients walk in, and to ensure they return in the future. I also help out the esthetician's and RMT’s when needed.

What is your favourite service at the spa?

My favourite service at the spa is the pedicures. I haven’t tried all of the treatments yet but I definitely want to try a facial. I only hear great things about them.  

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

Well since I work every Sunday from 9:30am-7:00pm I can’t really do anything else for the remainder of the night, but if I didn’t work Sundays I would spend them relaxing and catching up on some reading and TV.

How long have you been with Casbah?

I am proud to say I have been a part of the Casbah team for just over 10 years. It's been an honour and privilege to see our spa grow and succeed the way it has.

What is your role at the Spa?

I am a medical esthetician at the spa and enjoy all the variety of my day.

What is IPL?

IPL is short for intense pulsed light. It is a light based therapy used for hair removal, reduction in pigment as well as vascular issues and resurfacing of the skin.

Who are good candidates for it?

It is suitable for almost anyone.

Does it take a while to see results?

Our clients have seen fantastic results in anywhere between one and four treatments. The treatments are comfortable, and so worth the results!

What's your favourite part of the job?

As I've been with Casbah for as long as I have many of my clients are my friends, they are extended family to me. I love that my work can help them feel more beautiful. I am passionate about my role at Casbah, I strive to achieve the very best.

What is your favourite service at the spa?

I have to say my favourite service is facials. I love giving my client my complete focus. Not only do they leave with a glowing complexion but they feel completely and utterly relaxed. With today's fast paced society I love that I can help to just slow things down, help my client to  remember the importance of putting them self first. We can all benifit from that! 

I feel blessed to work with such a great team of girls! I truly believe that Casbah has the best to offer, that's why I am so proud to be a part if this amazing  company.

How long have you been with Casbah?

I've been with Casbah for 1 year. My second Christmas Season with Casbah is just around the corner! The atmosphere at the spa and seeing everyone in preparation for the holiday season and helping clients pick out Christmas gifts is always fun. 

What is your role at the Spa?

I work on the front desk booking appointments and ensuring a relaxing and stress free experience for each and every client from the moment they book their appointment to coming in, enjoying their time with us, and checking out. I also do our St.Tropez full body spray tans as well as Jane Iredale mineral makeup applications, lessons, and touch ups.

What's your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is being surrounded by awesome co workers and happy clients! I truly enjoy coming to work each day and being surrounded by great people. I consider each and every staff member here a friend of mine and look forward to connecting with all of our guests!

What is your favourite service at the spa?

My favourite service is our Signature Manicure with Shellac polish, parafin treatment, hot stone massage, cuticle care, and a durable polish that wont chip. All for only $45, it doesn't get much better than that!

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

I like to take my dog out to the field or the beach and then wind down with a giant mug of tea and a movie :)

How long have you been with Casbah?

I have been with Casbah for 8 years now.

What is your role at the spa?

I am a medical esthetician.

Rumour is you give an excellent facial... what makes a great facial?

It's all the little things that make a great facial, from the customized skin care that's specific to my guests needs, the massage elements throughout the treatment to the ambience of the spa :)

How often would you recommend getting one?

Ideally, 4 to 6 weeks is ideal to help maintain a healthy skin, of course a great home care regime really helps to maintain the results of a great facial too.

If you can't make it to the spa do you have any tips for healthier skin at home?

I am a big believer in nourishing your skin from the inside out, maintaining a diet of fruits and veggies, lots of hydrating water and of course your omegas 3,6,9.

I also recommend creating a spa oasis for yourself in your home: draw a lovely milk bath (Casbah label milk baths are heavenly) start off by dry brushing the body, then cleanse and exfoliate the face with the recommended skin care from your esthetician. Apply a masque, then have a soak by candlelight. Finish your bathing experience with a filing of the feet, and an application of body cream (Eminence Naseberry is nice), foot cream (I like Footlogix or Spa Ritual) and upon rinsing your facial masque apply a moisturizer and face cream.

Any secret beauty weapons you'd recommend?

When your skin feels dry, dull or sensitive I highly recommend Cellcosmet Anti Stress Masque. For firming hydration Cellcosmet cellular creams are individualized to your specific age group. If your skin is red, breakout prone and aging, the Aquafolia creams help to nourish and calm the skin.

What's your favourite part of the job?

It's all the wonderful people I see in the day... I am blessed to be able to take care of them :)

I enjoy all treatments, but I would say my favourites are laser, waxing and facials.

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

Sunday morning I have a ritual of giving myself a mini facial and pedicure while catching up on a weeks worth of coronation street ( I grew up watching that show with my granny). By the time afternoon comes around I seek out time with friends and family.

What is your role there?

I am a Registered Massage Therapist.

What style of massage do you like to do?

I use a variety of specific therapeutic techniques to treat an ailment someone may have. The best feeling is being able to relieve someone's pain or disfunction so they can return to their normal way of life. In particular, I love treating athletes and athletic-related injuries because I also strive to keep up an athletic lifestyle.

Do you do corrective work? (a focus on specific parts)

Yes, definitely!

What benefits can a client expect to see?

Massage is generally used to increase circulation, diminish pain, and improve function. Of course, each person is different and so the benefits are patient-specific.

What's your favourite part of the job?

Being able to leave someone better than when I first met them. Its such a blessing to be able to not only affect someone's physical well-being, but often mentally as well.

What is your favourite service at the spa?

Registered Massage Therapy, although I'm a little biased:)

What's your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

Go horseback riding!

Fall Fun!

After a blistering hot summer, fall has finally come to Vancouver. As such, I’ve already got some of my favorite fall activities on tap for this weekend, including pumpkin picking. I don’t particularly love the taste of pumpkin, but I adore the scent, and I always carve a few just in time for Halloween.

With that in mind, the myriad pumpkin services at spas around the country are sounding incredibly enticing to me. One interesting option is available at Casbah, introducing the new Pumpkin Body Wrap ($109, 75 minutes). The treatment begins with a pumpkin enzyme wrap to gently exfoliate dead skin cells and nourish depleted skin. I have been at Evo since April of 2012. 

What is your role there?

I am an esthetician focusing on makeup, lash extensions, waxing and express facials. 

What are some of your favourite beauty products?

My favourite product for everyday is my Jane Iredale PurePressed Base. And for those nights when I want to pump up my look, I love my Passion Lip Fixation lip stain and gloss combo.

Any insider beauty tips for us?

My beauty tip would be not to limit yourself and to try new things. Before I was a makeup artist there were things I was afraid to try, like bright lips or a bold shadow. Now, I'm completely in love with both! 

What's your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of my job is the feeling that I have made my guest's day better. Whether it be with makeup, a set of lashes, or even a nicely shaped brow. 

What is your favourite service at the spa?

My favourite service is the St. Tropez spray tan. I love the immediate glow and the flawless bronze colour. Great for weddings, vacations or a hot date;) 

What's your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

Last week was your first week full time at Casbah, how has it been so far?

I have really enjoyed working at Casbah so far. The staff is hilarious and clients have been great.

What is the difference between a massage therapist and an RMT?

The difference is that RMT's are trained to assess in order provide massage as a medical treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.

What made you decide to be an RMT?

I wanted to be in a profession where I could help people, I decided to give massage a try and have really enjoyed it.

Do you have a favourite massage to give?

Not particularly, I enjoy using a combination of techniques.

What's your favourite part of the job? 

The feeling I get from helping someone who is in pain and making them feel better.

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

I love driving up to whistler with my girlfriend on a sunny day, going on hikes or cooking for my friends and family.

What is Juvaderm?
Juvederm is a soft injectable gel that is made of Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar found in your body. It combines with the water in your skin to instantly restore lost volume and reduce lines an wrinkles. It's a wonderful product that gives smooth and natural results.

What areas do you treat fillers with?
Fillers can be used in all areas of the face that need volume restored from cheeks to lips to jawline. In addition, there are other areas that show the signs of aging that we can subtly treat. They create wonderful results in softening the overall face and help keep that youth volume. Clients love the refreshed look they get and the feeling often of turning back time. Fillers can be used for all age clients (18+) that desire volume or correction.

How long do the results last for?
Typically Fillers last between 8-12 months sometimes longer depending on the individual client. It proves to be a great investment in maintaining a good appearance and we always compare the tangible results fillers do give to many of the other less dramatic options that address only the surface of the skin.

What are the biggest concerns you usually hear from your patients?
Patients want to look natural above all and we wouldn't have it any other way. Gone are the days of over filling and exaggerated lips. We believe facial aesthetic treatments with Botox and Fillers is an art. We take our time and really invest in placing the products to give the very best results we can. This is a process and we believe that careful consideration and working with you both in treatment and follow up will achieve the best look for you.

What are some of the other medical services you offer?
In addition to Fillers we offer Botox treatments for lines and wrinkles as well as the product Latisse which will grow your own lashes longer, thicker and darker eliminating the need for lash extensions and similar types of applied products.

What's your favourite part of the job?
Doing treatments with Botox and Fillers is creative and rewarding process. I love the look on the faces of clients when they see in the mirror the person they hoped to be more like. All of us at Watermark are invested in the renewed and lasting benefits that facial aesthetics provide and it goes much, much further than skin deep. Clients feel better and it shows. That means everything.

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
Sundays are family time. My wife and I often spend our afternoons with the children going for a walk or time at the park. Life is so busy so this is our time to reconnect with them, other family and friends.

How long have you been with Casbah?

I've been with Casbah since June, 2010.

What is your role at Evolution?

I am our Senior Makeup Artist.

I know you're a busy lady because you're also a student... what are you studying?

I am currently writing my Honours Thesis for my BA in Psychology. Eventually (after approximately 7 more years!), I hope to earn a PhD in Clinical Psychology.

What are some of your favourite makeup trends for the fall?

I always love a good skin-focus trend which is one of the big ones this season, especially since I always say that great skin is your best accessory. This one is a cinch when we have a such a great new product in the new BB cream from Jane Iredale! Although I love the ethereal glow of a perfected palette, I am such a colour monger and a sucker for a soft, smokey eye, so the peacock-toned and smokey-brown eye-focus trends out this fall are a more dramatic alternative to the minimalist, but ever-popular skin-focus.

Favorite colours?

Burgundy for Autumn has always been one of my favourites because it tends to look fantastic on most skintones, however I do have a few close runners up: Teal and Aubergine. Jewel tones are HUGE in fashion this season, and in terms of makeup, they can really bring the face to life. I love Jane Iredale Eyeshadows in Wine & Roses and Magic as well as Mystikol liners in Amethyst, Aquamarine and Malachite. When used as a strategic pop of colour, these gems can really enhance your fall ensembles!

Any products you're loving?

How much space do I have?? I have so many favourites (in skincare and makeup), it's impossible to list them all, but considering my aforementioned trend-loves, I'll keep them trend-relevant. ;)

Of course, I love skin-perfecting products like the Clarisonic Pro and Glam Glow mud mask and of course, the new BB cream from Jane Iredale; everyone was holding their breath for a skin-perfecting, full coverage foundation from Jane... and now it's here!

I also really like the new eye shadow trio from Jane Iredale, "Sundown", from the Fall launch, and the Girlactik eye shadows we carry at Evolution because they have an excellent pigment pay-off. "Sultry", "Vintage" and "Bark" are my go-to's for that soft-smokey (what I call an "editorial" smokey) eye. The Girlactik eye glazes are great as shadow bases because they prevent your eyeshadow from creasing, and you can use them under your shadows to intensify shimmer and depth of colour. 

What's your favourite part of the job?

I always consider the connection I have with my clients to be the MOST rewarding part of my job. Of course, it's always fun to give someone a great look for a night out, but when I feel I've reached someone- truly helped that person see themselves in a more confident light, or completely lift their self-confidence, it reinforces my passion for this work. That's why I love doing what I do.

What is your favourite service at the spa?

I think it's safe to say that everyone loves the Signature Facial because it's the "full-meal deal": not only do you get a facial, as expected, but you are treated to so many other 'perks' like a mini-massage as well!

Although it's not a "treat" service, I am loving the results I get from the laser hair removal! Not having to worry about waxing or shaving is it's own treat!!

I have also had great results from the Contour Wrap. I lost 9 1/2 inches in an hour and a half...pretty impressive!

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

Considering the demands of my school schedule, it's rare that I get an afternoon "off". But when I do, I love to curl up on the couch and watch a movie with my favourite person, my "fur babies" (my cats) and a cup of tea. :)

Most of my clients are concerned with aging and pigment concerns.

What would you recommend for aging and pigment issues?

Both our AHA peels and Fractional Laser Resurfacing are great treatments that deliver quick results.

Any products you'd recommend?

Who is a good candidate for botox?

Normally in our 30’s we begin to see the signs of aging and Botox can help soften the lines and wrinkles that are beginning to appear. Now with more environmental factors and exposure to the sun people are experiencing the affects of aging earlier. Preventative treatments can help patients from developing deep lines and wrinkles instead of waiting for them to appear. Patients should be over 18 years of age, be physically healthy with no history of neuromuscular diseases, and are not pregnant or nursing.

What are the biggest concerns you usually hear from your patients?

“Will I look frozen or feel numb?” One of the biggest concerns patients have with Botox is the desire for a natural look. We believe in always being conservative in our treatments, maintaining that a natural look is the best look. Botox does not affect the nerves that regulate sensation so numbness is not a concern.

Do you get a lot of first time patients?

Yes, we see many first time patients who are looking to either maintain a youthful appearance by using Botox to prevent the forming of wrinkles and fine lines or those who want to soften the ones they have now.

How long does an appointment typically take?

An appointment for Botox is a quick and simple process of a few injections with a tiny needle. The treatment is near painless and no anaesthetic is required. You can resume your normal activities immediately.

How long do the results last for?

Results for Botox last between 3 to 4 months depending on the client.

What are some of the other medical services you offer?

We offer Dermal Filler injections to facial areas such as the cheeks, lips and jawline that have lost volume and fullness over time. Juvederm is a dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid(a naturally occurring sugar found in your body) which combines with the water in your skin to restore lost volume and reduce lines and wrinkles. Results are instant and natural looking and, results can last up to a year.

What's your favourite part of the job?

There is nothing more exciting than seeing how facial aesthetic treatments with Botox and Dermal Fillers can transform a patient both on the outside and almost more importantly, on the inside. Mirrors and life can sometimes be hard, so to see the faces of our patients light as they up as they recognize more of the person they remember to be, well, that is very gratifying and rewarding.

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?

I love many things travel, skiing, climbing the Grouse Grind... but when it comes to lazy Sunday afternoons nothing compares to the company of my three beautiful daughters and some great conversation.

How long have you been with Casbah? 

I joined Casbah in October of last year.  I previously worked with a spa chain downtown but love working where I live!  

What is your role at the Spa? 

I am the Spa Manager and have an amazing team around me!

Any juggling secrets for the working moms out there?

My secrets as a working mom are to never be too hard on myself. I often think tomorrow is another day to do better - be it in work or home life. I also try to be 100% present in whatever I am doing. When I'm at work I'm passionate about what I'm doing and give it my best and when I'm at home with my daughter & husband I try to enjoy every moment. As all working moms know its a constant balancing act and some days are better than others.

As a busy mom, what's your typical beauty routine?

I've been in the spa industry for several years and appreciate the importance of a skin care routine. I try to have facials with clarisonic every couple months for a deep clean. I exfoliate at home regularly as well. I use Dermalogica skincare daily and love their new primer. Most days - especially when I'm short on time getting ready in the morning I use that on its own with some Jane Iredele concealer if I need extra coverage. I'm all about looking polished with the least amount of steps.

What's your favourite part of the job? 

I really enjoy sourcing new, exciting items for the spa. It's really great to work with a team of people that are so passionate about about what they do. 

What is your favourite service to get at the spa? 

My favourite NEW service is the Cool Stone & Aloe Massage from our Summer Menu. It's such a refreshing treatment on a warm, sunny day.

What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? 

At this time of year - I love exploring farmers markets or spending time at the beach.
